🐾 MADOC Dog Obedience Training

Welcome to the Montgomery Dog Obedience Club (MADOC). If you are searching for effective, supportive, and expert dog training in Montgomery, AL, you have come to the right place.

Our instructors are experienced volunteers who are deeply passionate about canine education. They actively train and title their own dogs, frequently attend professional seminars, and stay up to date with the latest training methodologies. Because our trainers are practitioners themselves, they bring real-world experience, patience, and empathy to every class, dedicated to promoting responsible dog ownership.


📅 Class Format & Schedule

Each eight week session includes:

  • Orientation Night (handlers only)
  • Six weeks of hands on training with your dog
  • Week eight is CGC testing-free to all students
  • Location: Goodwyn Community Center, Montgomery, Alabama
  • Times: Tuesdays at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm

Our dog trainers assess each dog’s temperament. They offer students with progress updates and assign homework. They also teach handlers how to reinforce good behavior at home.


📌 Important Class Requirements

  • Advance registration is required.
  • Minimum age: Students must be 12+.
  • Handlers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Vaccination documentation is mandatory for all dogs:
    • Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo (within 3 years)
    • Rabies (within 1 year unless 3‑year vaccine documented)
    • Bordetella (nasal or oral)
  • Dogs cannot attend class without proof of vaccinations.

Payment: Please make checks for obedience classes payable to “MADOC.” Payment for classes should be sent along with your enrollment form and vaccination records. Enrollment/Handout


👩‍🏫 Our Instructors

MADOC’s instructors and assistant instructors volunteer their time to offer high-quality, positive, and effective dog training education. They:

  • Promote responsible dog ownership
  • Continuously improve their own training skills
  • Work toward obedience titles with their own dogs
  • Attend seminars to learn new techniques

📝 Enrollment & General Rules

To enroll:

  • Visit the Enrollment/Handout Page.
  • Download the Enrollment Form and Waiver (Word or PDF).
  • Review the General Rules and any relevant handouts.
  • If unsure which class fits your dog, check the Procedures for Obedience Evaluations.
  • Email your enrollment form and vaccination records to the Enrollment Chairperson at least one week before class begins.

🐶 Class Descriptions

Puppy Class

Age: 3–7 months
Goals: Socialization, impulse control, problem‑solving, responsible ownership
Exercises:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Leave It
  • Come
  • Puppy Play

Beginner Class

Age: 5 months and up
Goals: Build a strong handler–dog relationship, problem-solving, and socialization
Exercises:

  • Sit & Down
  • Heel position and loose leash walking
  • Stay and Come
  • Focused play
  • Managing barking, biting, and digging
  • Additional foundational skills

Beginner Plus Class

Goals:

  • Prepare for CGC/CGCA titles
  • Prepare for Novice/Intermediate Tricks titles
  • Introduce AKC Novice/Beginner Novice obedience exercises
  • Teach skill-building games for future dog sports
  • Expand handler’s animal husbandry knowledge

Novice 1 Class

Prerequisite: Beginner Class or equivalent
Goal: Refine Beginner skills and prepare for Novice competition
Exercises:

  • Heeling with automatic sits
  • Stand for exam
  • Recall with front sit
  • Finish
  • Figure eight
  • Group sits and downs

Beginner Rally Class

Imagine an AKC Rally event as a team sport where you and your dog work together on a course. As you navigate side-by-side, you will encounter 10 to 20 different signs along the way. Each sign gives instructions for the next skill you and your dog need to perform.

Prerequisite: Beginner Obedience or equivalent
Goal: Rally blends agility style course navigation with obedience exercises.

It’s a fun, confidence-building bridge between the CGC test and the Novice Obedience ring.
